A week ago I reported a problem on the site www.vodafone.it, because my SIM card was broken and the service to order a new one online was not working. Today I got a response from them: "In order to find the problem, we need some information from you, including your username, password, cellphone number and a detailed description of the problem. Please send us the information to our email address."
My first thought: what the ****? I really got an email from the customer care to send them MY PASSWORD?! The rest of the email does not make sense either, because I had to fill in a form online which included my username, cellphone number and a description of the problem (when the site simply says: "error during execution, service not available", how more detailed can I be?).
My response to them: you are mad, please send my a new SIM card and I will forget this. If I don't get a response by them in the next week I'm changing operator. Since I use prepaid cards only in Italy, that wont be a problem at all! I think I can keep my number too.
The most frightening VODAFONE FAIL ever. This is sad and makes me angry!

Be happy you're not in the States & tied up with carriers like Sprint. Meh
If you have Orange in Italy, I'd strongly recommend it. In the 15+ years that I've been with them, they haven't angered me once.
They will let you keep your old number too.
And yes, everyone outside America should feel a warm fuzzy feeling that we aren't stuck with Verizon & Sprint.
Just one notice: if you plan to maintain your phone number in Italy, don't try to change operator, keep vodafone and simply go in a vodafone point and claim a new sim because you lost the old one.
It is many way easier then asking anything else, and you can keep your credit and phone number obviously.
I am italian :D
@Marco: you're probably right, but Felix lives among the mountains and I'm not sure they have Vodafone points there :P
@Felix: if you're willing to change, I'd recommend Wind (provided it has coverage in your not-so-italian area :D).
@Felix: heh, the previous comment was mine.
actually you are right cosimo ;) the "punto vodafone" of my town was closed some months ago ;) now I would have to drive to bolzano (30km) where the next store is ;)
the incapacity of their customer care should be enough reason to change :)
@Marco: I have to check what changing the carrier costs...but getting a new sim costs 8€ (even if the thing just gave up on me -_-) I think changing operator wont be more expensive...
If you're going to change operator, be warned that other Italians operators are stupid as well (if not even more)!
I've moved from TIM to Vodafone because they thought that MY sim card was registered to another person (which of course was bullshit because I bought it in a TIM shop, with my documents!) and refused to offer me some services I asked by telephon because of that! And they refused to tell me who MY sim card was registered to according to their DBs!
The "funny" thing is that I went to a TIM point sayng "that number is mine" and they registered it to me "again". They didn't even asked me for an identity document or to even prove them that I physically have the sim...
well, Italy really sucks.
(sadly, I'm Italan...)
Since I am living in Italy I am using Wind as mobile operator because people recommended me and I really recommend it to you too, specially if your friends are Wind.
With 8 eur/month I can talk 600 min IIRC which is enough for me and send 4000 sms.
Oops, sorry... this comment sounded like an advertisment :?
Ciao!
I will traveling to Italy for a 2 week vacation from US. I am looking to buy a Vodafone SIM card after I reach Italy. Couldn't understand the tarrif plans on vodafone.it site. Can somebody help me please?
Also is there an email address for Vodafone or wind - italy customer support. I couldn't find that either.
@Stephanie: To be honest, I don't understand the plans either...
